Professional Development Plan

“Connect activities integrate what we are learning with what we know…they add higher-level knowledge and skills…to link something already known or prompt application of learning, it is a Connect activity (Horton, 2012, p. 163). The Connect-type activity that I chose to design for this assignment deals with professional development with both beginning and intermediate practitioners in the early childhood field and classroom. This blog post on professional development will prepare early childhood professionals for work in the classroom by highlighting key factors that should be outlined in an efficient and precise professional development plan that can be realistically executed.

After reviewing this post and participating in a few Do-type activities such as discussions among peers and Connect-type activities such as original work where students will design and submit a copy of their professional development plan, the learners shall be able to:

 (1) Describe what it means to have a professional development plan

(2) Review key factors that make up an effective professional development plan

 (3) Explain why a professional development plan is imperative to professional/personal growth

(4) Develop a detailed professional development plan.

I am confident that these four learning objectives will allow participants to identify the components needed to design and execute a plan that will make him/her successful in the early childhood field and assist in the understanding of the significance such a plan will have on their professional advancement.

For the purpose of this 10-minute presentation, data will be gathered and recorded through the means of various activities which include watching a video Setting Goals (4 minutes 14 seconds).

After the video, in 150 words reflect and respond to the scenario which presents an early childhood professional that is unhappy with his/her working conditions, has set goals to improve, but has set unrealistic goals and how it is affecting his/her overall performance at work and in the classroom. Explain what realistic goals he/she would set in this particular situation.

For your second activity, use a discussion board to identify and write down five college courses or training that will help them achieve their desired employment position.

For your last activity, design a professional development plan. The plan shall be recorded in a Word document and sent to the instructor via email.

A grading rubric for the activities mentioned above would include sections that will address: (1) Adherence to Assignment Expectations and (2) The extent to which the work reflects the student’s ability to: Understand the assignment’s purpose; Understand and analyze material in the presentation.
